The Château d'Usson : an architectural gem

In 1879 William Augerau brought the Usson Castle, which was originally built in a neighboring village. However the new owner wanted to give the castle a new lease of life, and restore it to its former glory… but the only difference was a new location a few kilometers away! It was therefore necessary to take down the castle and use wagons to transport all the parts to its new location. This long process took more than 4 years to complete!

It was rebuilt in keeping with its original renaissance style and the desires of its new owner, who added various elements which have followed the style of other buildings, for example the lounge “Regency de Madame de Pompadour” which originated from the “Choisy le Roy” castle.

In the middle of the castle you can find the surprising architecture of the winter garden, this idea was inspired by the inventions which were presented at the first “Universelle” exhibition in 1889 and the halls of the “Gustave Eiffel” train station.

The finely chiseled facades of the courtyard are recorded amongst the Historical Monuments and are surrounded by mysterious gargoyles. These sculptures, with their beautiful detail, represent the 7 virtues. They are the work of Nicolas Bachelier, a celebrated student of Michel-Ange.
